Kirsten Dunst was spotted wearing a super cute inside out braided updo at the Sundance Film Festival. I love that it isn’t perfect — the lived-in look makes it more edgy, less Heidi.
Here’s how I plan to recreate it:
Step 1: Create this style on dirty hair. Spritz a bit of sea salt spray like John Masters Organics Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray with Lavender, $16.50 on your strands to add a bit of texture if your hair is smooth and fine.
Step 2: Create a deep side part.
Step 3: Starting at your part (with the hair on the side opposite your part), begin braiding the front two inches of hair. You want to create an inside out French braid, which means that you’ll need to create the braid by moving each side section UNDER the middle section. With normal braids, you move one side section OVER the middle section to replace it and continue the braid. The inside out braid is what makes the braid look like it’s sitting on top of the other hair instead of being woven into the hair.
Step 4: Continue picking up hair and creating the inside out braid — moving each section under the next until you have braided the front two inches of your hairline, and reach the back of your head.
Step 5: Secure the braid and the hanging hair from the other side of your head into a ponytail at the back of your head.
Step 6: Twist your ponytail into a bun and secure with bobby pins.
